SKY STYLE TE 4'7-inch 55L TEST

Hello fellow riders,
Here's a presentation and test of the new 2023 Fanatic-Duotone Sky Style TE 4'7-inch in 55 liters.

Wing Test: Fanatic Sky Style TE 4.7 2023 Board

This board is designed for lighter riders and/or experienced riders.
This Sky Style TE version is available in 4'9 65L, 4'11 75L, and 5'1 85L.
The range is completed with the Sky Surf TE 4'2-inch 25L, 4'4-inch 35L, 4'6-inch 45L, and the Sky Free TE 5'3-inch 95L, 5'5-inch 105L.

Unboxing,

Discovery of a new shape, with a high-end construction (carbon PVC sandwich).
It is compact and has balanced proportions.

Board 5kg - 5.6kg with Duotone EVA straps + leash

Sky Wing boards come standard with the brand's windsurf straps.
I opted for Duotone EVA straps to save weight and prevent additional water absorption, as EVA straps are hydrophobic.
They are super comfortable; I recommend them without hesitation.

3 Fanatic straps = 445g - wet = 660g, or 13% of the board's weight.
3 Duotone EVA straps = 190g - wet = 230g, or 4.6% of the board's weight.

Fanatic - Duotone R&D has introduced many new features for 2023.
There's great work on the rails; they are straight from the tail to the middle and then slightly tucked in towards the nose.
Nothing to say about the finish; it's clean and seems more solid.
The deck features a very pronounced and lowered concave, with more volume at the front, creating a bulb effect.
The pad is a bit softer than the 2022 boards, offering more comfort.
There's a handle on the hull shape which is appreciated, even for this volume, to facilitate launching and the removal of the deck handle.
The US rails seem longer to me, 27cm.
Multitude of strap adjustments: Y-straps, in-line, goofy, regular.

On the water,

In displacement mode, with my build, take-off is effortless to get on my knees, with excellent volume distribution.
For roll (lateral axis), the concave deck offers good control for bracing the knees.
In kneeling or standing posture, it is more stable longitudinally, thanks to its extra volume at the front. Less pitching for take-off compared to 2022 models.
As soon as I have pressure in the wing, the board is immediately out of the water; I don't submarine.

At take-off,

I find it very easy to get going; it's stiff, reactive underfoot with excellent glide at take-off, and very good support at the back.
Its length/width ratio, plus its optimized rails, give it good glide at launch.
The low end feels very similar to my old 60L Sky 4.8.
When pumping, I feel a lightness underfoot, which allows me to be very efficient in launching it and getting on the foil.

My feelings,

Once airborne, it's much more responsive and stiffer than my 2022 Sky 4.8. The deeply concave deck provides better foil control, making it more direct and allowing for improved heel/toe pressure control.
Some might find the board a bit thick under the back foot, at 10cm.
During touchdowns, the front volume allows the board to bounce and avoid "nose-diving."
Jumping is pure joy; its stiffness gives it incredible pop on impulse, and its compact nature makes it very maneuverable in the air.
The other key feature, its bulbous nose, allows for immediate re-entry into the water after landing.

Areas for improvement: straps adapted to this type of board need to be developed.
The original straps are too big and too heavy.
The last point, the price of €2099, is too expensive for many riders.

In conclusion,

A very, very good 2023 model.
Fanatic and Duotone have done an excellent job with R&D.
The board is ultra-versatile, with more stiffness and an improved shape for greater responsiveness and glide, along with better volume distribution for more balance and control.
I hope the 5 liters less will allow me to keep my low end, to take off in a 10-knot gust.
It will be my only board for 2023.

Looking forward to seeing you and chatting on the beach. Best regards, Kevin

Once airborne, it's much more responsive and stiffer than my 2022 Sky 4.8. The deeply concave deck provides better foil control, making it more direct and allowing for improved heel/toe pressure control.
