Kitesurf Bars: Size, Width, and Compatibility

Your bar is the one piece of gear you hold onto the entire time you're riding, and it's what triggers your safety system. Yet, it's often the most overlooked choice. Many riders stick with a bar that's too wide or too long for their current kites. What bar width works best for your kites?

Your bar width choice primarily depends on the size of the kites you ride most often. A bar that's too wide for a small kite will make steering feel sluggish and tiring. On the flip side, a bar that's too narrow for a large kite won't give you enough leverage.

Watch out for a common misconception: most bars come in two widths, but each bar is fixed at its chosen width. For example, you pick the Duotone Click Bar in either small or large when you buy it; you can't adjust it later. Only a few models, like the Eleveight Vary Bar, actually offer two positions on the same bar. If you ride with three very different kite sizes, go with the width that matches the kite you use most often.

lines length: 22 m or shorter?

The 22 m line length remains the standard, coming stock on almost every bar. Riders shorten to 18 or 20 m for quicker response in freestyle and strong wind, or for foiling in light wind where shorter lines make the kite more lively. We rarely go beyond 24 m, unless it's for pure light wind riding. Most bars in our selection include 2 m extensions, saving you from buying a whole new set of lines.

Universal bar or a bar from your kite's brand?

A modern four-line bar will work with most kites out there, as long as you match the number of lines and connector types. That's the only real limitation: a five-line kite needs a five-line bar. Everything else is adjustable. Even the Duotone Click Bar, often thought of as brand-specific, can be used with any kite, and its unique fingertip adjustment works just fine. Automatic untwister or not?

This is the one detail nobody thinks about when buying, but everyone ends up dealing with later. As soon as your kite does a full rotation, those two front lines twist up. Some bars come with an untwister that automatically realigns them when you let go. Others force you to untangle them by hand, holding the bar up mid-session. This isn't just for freestyle and big air. When foiling or riding strapless, you loop the kite a lot, and that's exactly when you'll appreciate not having to untangle between tacks. An untwister is worth considering, no matter your riding style.

What's the budget for a kite bar?

As of 09/02/2026, our new bars range from 419 to €869. We also regularly offer inspected second-hand bars around €350. The price primarily reflects the depower system, chicken loop quality, and line materials. A recent entry-level bar is always a safer bet than a ten-year-old high-end bar with worn-out lines.

When to replace your bar

Replace your bar based on its condition, not its model year. Always check the chicken loop and its pin, the depower line sleeve, any wear on the front lines at the knots, and the quick release. The quick release must open smoothly under load. You can replace our lines separately from the lines and pigtails section, which helps extend the life of a healthy bar.

What kite bar width should you choose?

42 to 50 cm for 5 to 9 m² kites, 50 to 55 cm for 9 to 12 m² kites, and 55 to 60 cm for larger kites. Most bars come in two widths. They are not adjustable after purchase. Choose the width for the kite you use most often.

Is a kite bar compatible with all kites?

A four-line bar works with most four-line kites on the market. The only real limit is the number of lines: a five-line kite requires a five-line bar. The Duotone Click Bar can be mounted on all kites. This includes its finger-adjustable trim.

What is a swivel on a kite bar?

It is the mechanism that realigns the front lines after a kite rotation. This means you do not have to untangle them by hand. Not all bars have one. This is relevant for freestyle and big air. It also applies to foil and strapless riding, where you loop the kite a lot. What lines length should I use to start?

22 m is the original length supplied. It offers the best compromise between power and easy re-acceleration. Shorter lines are reserved for freestyle, strong wind, and foil.

When should you change your bar lines?

Change them as soon as a front line shows wear at the knot. Also change them if there is significant whitening or a measurable length difference between the two. A worn set of lines unbalances the Kite. It also puts strain on the quick release.
