Wing foil: Choosing Your Gear (Wing, Board, Foil)

Updated July 2026

Wing foil combines a handheld wing, a board, and a foil to let you fly above the water. Unlike kitesurf, there are no lines or bar, so you're free to release the wing at any time, making it super accessible for learning. At GlissEvolution, our shop in Pornichet since 2005, our team of passionate riders helps you put together the perfect setup for your level, weight, and local spots. To get started, be sure to check out our beginner's guide to wingfoiling.

A complete setup includes three essential elements: a wing (classic or parawing), a board, and a foil.

Explore our wing sections: wings, boards, foils, pocket wing, packs, and second-hand gear.

Assembling Your Equipment

The Wing

The wing is what generates your traction. Common sizes range from 3 to 7 m², and you'll choose the surface area based on the wind conditions and your weight (see our table below). The classic wing, with an inflatable Leading Edge and strut held by handles or a wishbone, is the allround, easy-to-handle choice. The parawing, on the other hand, is a soft, frameless wing that folds into a small pocket and is held at the end of a rope connected to a belt. This ultra-compact option is popular for downwind and prone riding, but it does require a bit more technique. For your budget, expect around 700 to 1.€100 (indicative prices 2026). We proudly stock Duotone, F-ONE, Ozone, Flysurfer, Eleveight, and Altis.

The board

The board's volume, measured in liters, directly impacts its stability: the higher the volume, the easier it is to get started. You'll choose your board based on your weight and skill level (see our table below). Rigid boards, crafted from carbon or epoxy, offer the best performance, while inflatable boards are incredibly easy to transport. Expect to invest around 800 to 2.€000 (indicative prices 2026). We carry top brands like Duotone, F-ONE, Armstrong, Eleveight, and Slingshot.

The foil

The foil is what lets you take off and fly above the water. It combines a Front Wing, which generates lift, a stabilizer, a mast, and a fuselage. For beginners, a large Front Wing (around 1.800 to 2.200 cm²) and a short mast (60 to 70 cm) are more forgiving. As you progress, you can reduce the surface area and lengthen the mast (75 to 90 cm) for enhanced performance. Expect to pay around 800 to 2.€300 for a complete foil (indicative prices 2026). We work with F-ONE, Duotone, Armstrong, Sabfoil, and Slingshot.

Accessories

A wing leash is mandatory for safety; for parawing, a harness line connects the wing to your belt. A board leash is highly recommended when you're learning. A helmet is strongly advised, as the foil is rigid and sharp, and an impact vest is crucial for back protection. Finally, make sure you have a wetsuit that's suitable for the water temperature.

What Wing Size for Different Wind Conditions?

The wing surface area is chosen based on the wind and your weight. Here are some indicative guidelines for an allround wing.

Wing SizeWindUsage
3 to 4 m²25 knots and moreStrong wind, performance
4.5 to 5.5 m²15 to 22 knotsAllround, standard conditions
6 to 7 m²10 to 15 knotsLight wind

Most riders own two wings, for example a 4 m² and a 6 m², to cover a wide wind range. To anticipate your sessions, consult our Windguru reading guide.

What Board Volume for Your Weight?

Volume is chosen according to your weight and level. Here are indicative benchmarks, in liters.

Rider weightBeginnerIntermediateAdvanced
60 kg100 to 110 L80 to 90 L50 to 65 L
70 kg110 to 120 L90 to 100 L60 to 75 L
80 kg120 to 130 L100 to 110 L70 to 85 L
90 kg130 to 140 L110 to 120 L80 to 95 L

To start, it's always better to go a bit bigger: a stable board will significantly speed up your learning curve.

What Budget Should You Plan For?

Here are indicative ranges for a complete setup, including wing, board, and foil, for both new and certified second-hand gear.

For second-hand gear, our team meticulously inspects each item before we offer it for sale.

Which gear for your riding style?

For freeride, which is all about pure recreational riding, an allround wing and a stable board are the simplest combination. If you're chasing waves, you'll prefer a compact board and a maneuverable foil. For downwind and long glides, a long board paired with a very compact parawing truly shines. If you're ever in doubt, the easiest way to dial in your choice is to chat with us: we'll help you refine your setup based on your skill level and local riding conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the budget to start wingfoil?

A complete new entry-level kit costs €2.500 to €3.500. For checked second-hand gear, expect €1.200 to €1.800.

What board size should you start with?

Aim for your body weight plus 40 to 50 liters. So, an 80 kg rider would typically choose a board around 120 to 130 L. A board that's too small will make learning significantly more challenging.

What is a parawing?

A parawing is a soft wing without an inflatable structure, designed to fold into a small pocket and be held by a rope connected to a belt. Its compact and lightweight nature makes it a favorite for downwind and prone riding, though it does require a bit more technique than a classic wing.

Wingfoil or kitesurf to start?

These are two distinct sports. Wingfoil doesn't use lines and focuses on mastering the foil, while kitesurf offers more power but requires managing lines. Your choice ultimately depends on your personal preferences.

Is a helmet necessary for wingfoil?

Highly recommended: the foil is rigid and sharp, and a helmet protects against impacts from falls. An impact vest is also advised.

How long does it take to learn wingfoil?

Generally, you can expect five to ten sessions to achieve your first flights, or even faster if you already have experience with other board sports. Taking a lesson with an instructor will significantly accelerate your learning process.

Can you wingfoil without wind?

No, the wing needs wind to generate power. Without wind, you can try prone foil (paddling) or pump foil (pumping).
