The Grenadines archipelago, dream spots for a catakite cruise.
The Grenadines archipelago forms a chain of over 600 islands and cays (small sandy or coral islands), stretching for nearly 100 km between the islands of Saint Vincent to the north and Frigate Island to the south.
The northern two-thirds of the archipelago are under the sovereignty of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, while the southern third belongs to Grenada. The two countries are separated by the Martinique Channel, a sea passage between Union and Carriacou.

► BEQUIA, SPRING BAY
Use: Freeride, foil, wing
Level: Beginner to expert
On the northeast of the island, two beautiful white sand beaches with their lagoon offer perfectly flat water spots.
You will also find a beautiful beach in the center of the island which is not protected by a reef, so the water there is choppier.
To get there, there's not much choice but to take a taxi. If you want to see turtles, I recommend taking a mask and snorkel, as the turtle sanctuary is a tourist trap.
► MAYREAU, SALT WHISTLE BAY
Use: Surf, freeride, foil, wing
Level: Advanced to expert
Difficult kitesurf take-off from the beach: boat anchored downwind of an isthmus, take-off from the beach at the foot of the coconut trees facing the wind.
Small lagoon with sandy beach and coral reef facing NE and navigable anchorage area even when not crowded.
Presence of small waves (max 2 m).
One of the best spots in the Grenadines in my opinion. But if there are a lot of people, it must quickly become complicated.
Onshore by NE
Side onshore by E wind
Sideshore by SE
On the spot, many bars, very busy in season.
► TOBAGO CAYS
Use: Freeride, foil, wing
Level: Beginner to expert level if assisted by dinghy.
Large coral reef facing the trade winds at water level.
Boat launch, no rigging allowed on the beach on the main island. For a beach start, you must go to the downwind Jamesby beach. Completely onshore wind start. If you mess up, the kite ends up in the cacti that cover the tip of the island. If in doubt, do some body dragging.
Beware of very high traffic during peak winter season.
Watch out for turtles when foiling.
Very pleasant navigation except for chop at high tide.
For the more adventurous, there is a wave upwind of Petit Tabac, an islet east of the barrier, but anchoring is difficult in the presence of swell.
Mooring to the buoy is mandatory and legendary, but it can be a bit rolly.
► UNION CLIFTON
Use: Freeride, foil, wing
Level: Beginner to expert
"JT Pro Center spot, the kite school of Jeremie Tronet."
Small, cramped lagoon very busy with boats at anchor behind a coral reef just below the surface. Possibility to ride outside the lagoon, easy access to the open sea.
Small private beach for the kite school to use in the off-season (paid in high season).
Warning: it is forbidden to end up in the anchored boats!
Intermediate to expert level, as the area is extremely limited.
All trade wind directions.
For the more adventurous, cross to Palm Island, a few miles upwind, with surfable waves on the island's windward coast.
► UNION, ASHTON, FRIGATE ISLAND
Use: Freeride, foil, wing
Level: Beginner to expert
The 5-star school spot!!!
Beginners to experts.
The take-off area on the small beach isn't wide, but it works one kite at a time. Whether surfing, twintip, freestyle, winging, or windsurfing, it's pure bliss. Sheltered behind an isthmus, it's a flat water spot that can quickly become saturated with numerous anchored boats and kite schools bringing their beginner students here.
For the more adventurous, cross the isthmus and ride in small waves on the coral reef.
Warning: there is a wind shadow zone behind Frigate Island.
► Carriacou and Sand Island.
Use: Freeride, foil, wing
Level: Beginner to expert
Carriacou doesn't have beautiful white sand beaches on its windward coast, but it is entirely navigable.
However, Sand Island and White Island are true postcards. A white sandbar in the middle of turquoise waters. These are great flat spots.
Be careful, you need to do a new clearance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best kite spots in the Grenadines?
Spring Bay (Bequia) and its flat lagoons, Salt Whistle Bay (Mayreau) for experienced riders, the Tobago Cays and their marine park, Clifton and Ashton/Frigate Island (Union Island), and Sandy Island off Carriacou.
Do you need a boat to kite the Grenadines?
It's highly recommended: the archipelago is ideally explored on a catamaran cruise (catakite). Some spots like Mayreau or the Tobago Cays are difficult to take off from the beach and require launching from the shore or a boat.
What skill level for the Grenadines?
Varies by spot: Bequia and Clifton welcome all levels, while Salt Whistle Bay and inter-island navigation are for experienced and expert riders (currents, coral, ocean-exposed spots).
Where can you check the wind in the Grenadines?
On the GlissEvolution weather pages: Tobago Cays, Union Island (Clifton and Ashton/Frigate), Mayreau, Bequia, and Carriacou, with live wind and trade wind forecasts.
