Kitesurf, wingfoil, and foil helmets: head protection for every rider

Updated July 2026

A helmet has become essential gear for kitesurf, wingfoil, and kitefoil. When you're foiling, the mast poses a real risk during falls. At GlissEvolution, our team has been riding the waters of Pornichet daily since 2005, and we're here to help you choose the right helmet. This section is part of our accessories range; be sure to also check out our safety gear and our full selection of foils.

Why wear a helmet?

Your helmet protects your head from contact with the foil mast, which is the primary risk in kitefoil and wingfoil. It also guards against impacts with your board, the Leading Edge of your kite, and other riders in crowded spots. We highly recommend wearing a helmet whenever you're foiling, and it's mandatory in all schools.

What types of helmets are available?

The hard shell helmet, with its rigid outer shell and internal foam, offers maximum protection. A soft shell helmet is lighter and less bulky, providing moderate protection. For those who prefer a more discreet look, the bump cap offers integrated protection with the style of a regular cap. Some models also feature removable ear protectors, which are a real bonus in colder water.

How to choose your size?

Measure your head circumference just above your eyebrows. Your helmet should fit snugly without feeling tight and remain stable when you shake your head.

SizeHead Circumference
XS51 to 52 cm
S53 to 54 cm
M55 to 56 cm
L57 to 58 cm
XL59 to 60 cm

Which helmet is right for your riding style?

For wingfoil, we recommend a lightweight model, often without ear protectors, so you can better hear the wind. For kitefoil, where there's an added risk of contact with your kite, a rigid, full-coverage helmet is a smart choice. Remember, a watersports helmet is specifically designed for the water: it dries quickly and resists salt, unlike a cycling or ski helmet.

The brands we offer

  • Mystic: Explore the Legacy and Vandal ranges, known for their precise fit and removable ear protectors.
  • Forward WIP: A specialist in watersports safety, offering robust rigid shells and stylish Bob caps.
  • ION: Check out the Slash ranges for sleek design and ultimate comfort.
  • Manera: Discover their ultra-light soft helmet, designed for a discreet look.
  • Bangproof: Get protective caps with a cool streetwear vibe.
  • Pro-tec: The classic, robust, and time-tested choice for reliable protection.

Maintaining your helmet

After every session in the sea, rinse your helmet with fresh water, then air dry it in the shade. Store it in a dry place without compressing it. Always replace your helmet after any significant impact or every three to five years.

What Budget Should You Plan For?

As a guide for 2026, excluding any current sale, expect to pay around 40 to €150 depending on the type, from a soft helmet or protective cap to a specialized rigid foil helmet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a helmet mandatory for Kite or wing foiling?

Not legally for recreational riding, but it is mandatory in schools and highly recommended for foil, where the mast poses a real risk.

Hard or soft helmet?

Hard helmets offer better protection against strong impacts; soft helmets are lighter and more discreet, with moderate protection sufficient for many riders.

Is a protective cap enough?

Bump caps protect against minor impacts. For foil, a classic helmet is still recommended for optimal protection.

How do I know if my helmet is the right size?

It should fit snugly without being tight or pressing on your temples, and it should not move when you shake your head. Measure your head circumference and follow the size guide.

Should you replace your helmet after an impact?

Yes: after a significant impact, the inner foam can be compressed and no longer protect. Also replace your helmet every three to five years.

Can you use a bike or ski helmet?

It is not recommended: watersports helmets dry quickly, do not retain water, and are salt-resistant, unlike land helmets.
