Kevin tests the Fanatic Aero 800 and 1000 Foil + 82cm Carbon Mast + 68cm Carbon Fuselage
Experience: Advanced level
Weight 65-67kg
Riding in Freestyle, freeride, surf, jumping.
Previous quiver:
Fanatic Sky 4.8 60L + Sabfoil W799-W1000-W800 + ENSIS Spin 3.1m², 4.1m², 5.1m²
Unboxing:
There's a travel bag for the mast and fuselage, with plenty of volume to easily fit two complete foils and assembly tools (Torx keys, no more hex keys). It's very practical to have everything at hand.
Each component has its own bag. It's great to be able to protect your gear simply with these modular bags.
The materials are high quality and well-finished.
Wingspan - Chord - Thickness - Ratio:
- Mast 820mm - C 137mm - Thickness 18mm
- Wing Aero Free 800: Wingspan 780mm - C 140mm - Thickness 18mm - R = 7.6
- Wing Aero Free 1000: Wingspan 855mm - C 160mm - Thickness 20mm - R = 7.3
- Stabilizer 216cm²: Wingspan 360mm - C 75mm - Thickness 8mm - R = 6
Reminder: Ratio = wingspan² / surface cm²
Mast + Fuselage:
The 82cm mast is a good compromise in size to suit all my uses.
It's not cumbersome for freestyle, it's easy for downwind, as well as for freeride in choppy conditions.
For Surf, some will find it a bit long. Generally, for Surf+foil, the trend is a mast between 65cm and 75cm.
You have to choose your spot based on water depth. For example, on the Casino sandbank in La Baule, with the right window, I had no problem riding with a 92cm and 82cm mast.
This setup is much lighter than my old Sabfoil, with identical stiffness. The mast-to-fuselage connection is ultra solid with three M8 screws. The assembly doesn't loosen during riding, a problem I had with my Sabfoil.
Fanatic Aero Free 800 - 1000 Foil:
The Aero Free range falls into the freeride, downwind freefly category.
Balancing ease of use and performance, this is a model you can truly do everything with: Jump, freefly, freeride, wave, downwind. It's incredibly allround.
The Aero Free is available in 1250cm² - R=6.5, 1000cm², and 800cm².
The fuselage-to-wing connection is incredibly solid, with 3 M8 screws. It's built to last.
The front section of the fuselage is better integrated into the wing, promoting glide and smooth flow.
It seems a new Glide HA range is expected this year, 2023, for downwind, lightwind, and speed: 590, 720, 905, 1080, 1300.
Stabilizer 216:
This is a new stab, part of the Free and Carve range. It's smaller than previous versions, offering more glide with excellent control.
For spring 2023, a new stab is expected in 165cm², with a High Aspect HA ratio. Performance use.
The Fanatic Aero Free foil in action:
I was surprised by its take-off capability. When pumping, the front thickness of its profile provides power underfoot and facilitates take-off.
It's an allround foil. With its rather moderate ratio, it offers good glide, good speed, and goes upwind well. Its glide allows it to easily reconnect bumps during downwinds.
Overall, this foil will be easy for intermediate riders and offers great performance even for experts.
For those who want even more performance, you can upgrade with the COLLAB mast, which will provide even more glide. And even more so when the new HA stab is released, which will further unleash the foil.
The entire setup is very stiff and responsive, and under high pressure when counter-heeling, the foil doesn't stall or ventilate.
In aggressive carving, if you lift the wing out of the water, the foil will tend to stall. So for those looking for 100% carving and Surf, you should choose the Aero Carve range, which is available in 750, 900, 1150, 1400.
The Fanatic Aero Free foil in conclusion:
Coming from a more performance-oriented foil, I was a little apprehensive. Having tested Fanatic foils in 2019, which were a disaster, this is completely different.
Fanatic has closed the gap and developed an allround, reliable, and high-performance foil. The construction and modularity of the wings are excellent. The assemblies are flawless, the foil is stiff, with good tools and modular bags that are very practical for handling and storage.
I can't wait to discover the new Glide range and the new stabilizer, which will undoubtedly upgrade the foil in terms of performance, even though it's already great.
For me, this foil is the most allround in the Fanatic range. I wholeheartedly recommend it for intermediate to expert riders who want an allround foil.
Looking forward to seeing you and chatting on the beach. Best regards, Kevin
