Kiteboards: Twintip, Surf, and Foilboard

Updated July 2026

The kiteboard is your connection to the water, pulling you along with your kite. Since 2005, GlissEvolution in Pornichet has been helping riders like you find the perfect kiteboard for your skill level, weight, and riding style. This section is part of our kitesurf gear; don't forget to check out our selection of kites, bars, and harnesses. For more in-depth information, be sure to consult our guide to choosing your twintip.

Types of Kiteboards

Kiteboards come in three main families. The twintip, with its symmetrical, bidirectional design, lets you ride in both directions without switching your stance. It's the most popular choice, perfect for beginners and the majority of freeride and freestyle riders. The Surf kiteboard, or directional board, is ridden in one direction, just like a surfboard, and can be used with or without straps (strapless) – it's ideal for wave enthusiasts. Finally, the more compact foilboard features a box for attaching a foil, making it the go-to for kitefoiling, allowing you to fly above the water even in light winds.

What Size Twintip Should You Choose?

The length of your twintip depends on your weight and skill level. A longer board offers more stability and forgiveness, making it ideal for beginners, while a shorter board is more agile and responsive. Here are some general guidelines in centimeters.

Rider weightBeginnerIntermediateAdvanced
55 to 65 kg136 to 140 cm132 to 136 cm128 to 132 cm
65 to 75 kg138 to 142 cm134 to 138 cm130 to 136 cm
75 to 85 kg140 to 144 cm136 to 140 cm134 to 138 cm
85 to 95 kg142 to 146 cm138 to 142 cm136 to 140 cm

If you're unsure, go one size up for enhanced stability and forgiveness.

Which Kiteboard for Your Riding Style?

For freeride, which is all about cruising and enjoying the ride, a versatile and comfortable twintip is your best bet. If freestyle and wakestyle are your game, you'll want a stiffer twintip with plenty of pop, designed for landing tricks and smooth receptions. For big air and massive jumps, a board with strong grip and stable landings will make all the difference. Finally, for wave riding, a strapless directional Surf kiteboard delivers a ride feel that's incredibly close to traditional surfing.

What's the Budget for a Kiteboard?

As a guide for 2026, excluding sale: expect to pay around 500 to €650 for an entry-level twintip, 700 to €900 for mid-range, and 1.100 to 1.€600 for high-end models featuring SLS and carbon constructions. A directional Surf kiteboard typically ranges from 930 to 1.€570, and a foilboard between approximately 600 and 1.€300. Our checked second-hand boards offer a great way to get equipped for less.

Frequently Asked Questions

Twintip or Surf to start?

The twintip is symmetrical and bidirectional, allowing you to ride in both directions without changing your feet, which greatly simplifies learning.

What size twintip for a 75 to 85 kg rider?

For beginners, we recommend a kiteboard between 140 and 144 cm, while intermediate riders will find 136 to 140 cm more suitable. Always refer to our size guide to fine-tune your choice based on your skill level.

Can a twintip be used for kitefoil?

No. Kitefoil requires a foilboard equipped with a box to attach the foil. A classic twintip is not designed for this.

Which board for freestyle?

A stiffer twintip, with good pop and flex suitable for landings. Brands offer models dedicated to freestyle and wakestyle.

How long does a kiteboard last?

Three to six seasons with proper care. Regularly check the inserts, pads, and fins.

Where to buy a kiteboard, new or second-hand?
