En savoir plusKitefoil: Choosing the Right Kite Foil
Updated July 2026
Kitefoiling lets you fly above the water in as little as 8 to 10 knots of wind, so you can ride when almost no one else is out. Because the kite delivers so much power, you can use smaller, faster Front Wings than you would for wing foiling. At GlissEvolution, our shop in Pornichet since 2005, our team of passionate riders will help you choose the perfect foil for your skill level. This section is part of our foils universe; be sure to also check out kitesurf and kiteboards.
What Front Wing Surface Area for Kitefoiling?
Thanks to the kite's power, Front Wing surface areas are smaller than in wing foiling. Here are some guidelines based on your skill level and weight.
| Front Wing Surface Area | Level | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| 1.200 to 1.500 cm² | Beginner | Easy take-off, stability |
| 800 to 1.200 cm² | Intermediate | Versatility, speed |
| Less than 800 cm² | Advanced, race | Speed and performance |
What Wind Conditions for Kitefoiling?
This is one of kitefoiling's biggest advantages: you can take off in as little as 8 to 10 knots, when a twintip would be stuck on the shore. With a large kite designed for light wind, you'll multiply your riding days.
What's the budget for a kitefoil?
As a guide for 2026, excluding sale items: expect to pay around 800 to 1.€000 for an entry-level complete foil, and more for carbon and performance ranges. Components are also available individually.

Frequently Asked Questions
What wind speed is needed for kitefoiling?
From 8 to 10 knots with a large, suitable kite: the foil takes off much earlier than a classic twintip.
What Front Wing surface area for beginner kitefoiling?
Around 1.200 to 1.500 cm² for stability and easy take-off, reducing as you progress.
Can a wing foil be used for kitefoil?
