En savoir plusKitesurf bars: How to choose your bar and lines
Updated July 2026
Your bar is the essential interface between you and your kite, controlling direction, adjusting power, and integrating your safety system. Choosing the right bar means gaining steering precision and peace of mind on the water. At GlissEvolution, our shop in Pornichet has been helping riders since 2005. Our expert team will help you find the perfect bar for your kites and riding style. This section is part of our kitesurf universe; don't forget to check out our kites, boards, and harnesses too. For more in-depth information, consult our bar size guide.
What are the components of a bar?
A bar brings together several elements: the bar itself, which you hold with two hands (generally 42 to 55 cm wide); the lines, four or five depending on the model, about 22 to 24 meters long; the chicken loop, which attaches to the harness; the depower, which adjusts the kite's power in flight; and the essential quick release safety system, connected to the leash.
What bar width should you choose?
Bar width directly impacts steering: a wider bar makes the kite more reactive and faster, while a narrower bar results in a smoother, more stable kite. Always match your bar width to the size of your kites.
| Wing Size | Recommended bar width | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| 5 to 9 m² | 42 to 46 cm | Small kites, strong wind, reactivity |
| 9 to 12 m² | 48 to 52 cm | Allround |
| 12 m² and up | 52 to 55 cm | Large kites, light wind, racing |
Some bars feature adjustable width, allowing them to cover an entire quiver.
Bar and Kite Compatibility
For optimal flight and safety, we always recommend using a bar from the same brand as your kite. If you're mixing brands, carefully check the bridle system, the number of lines (four or five), and especially the separation height of the front lines. If you have any doubts, our guide on bar and kite compatibility provides all the details, and our team is always here to help you verify.
Lines length
The standard line length of 22 to 24 meters offers a great allround compromise. Shorter lines (18 to 20 m) make the kite more reactive, which is ideal for freestyle and wave riding. Longer lines (24 to 27 m) provide more power and stability, proving useful in light wind conditions. Line extensions allow you to fine-tune your setup for various conditions.
Safety and Care
Regularly test your quick release system; it's your crucial connection to safety in an emergency. After every session at sea, rinse your lines and chicken loop with fresh water and store your bar away from direct sunlight. Lines wear out over time, so inspect them regularly and generally replace them every one to two years, as the front lines tend to wear faster.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to choose your bar width?
The ideal bar width depends on the size of your kites: opt for a wider bar for larger kites (for more throw and power), and a narrower bar for smaller kites (for increased reactivity). Refer to our width chart for detailed recommendations.
Can you use a bar from a different brand than your kite?
It's sometimes possible, but with caution: check the bridle system, the number of lines, and the height of the front line split. For safety, prioritize a bar of the same brand as your kite.
What length of lines should you choose?
22 to 24 meters is the allround standard. Go shorter (18 to 20 m) for reactivity in freestyle and wave riding, or longer (24 to 27 m) for power in light wind.
How often should you change your lines?
Inspect them regularly and change them at the first signs of wear (fraying, discoloration). On average, every one to two years, as front lines wear out faster.
What is the chicken loop?
It's the part that connects the bar to the harness. It includes the quick release that allows you to disconnect from the kite in an emergency: test it regularly.
