2026 Guide: How to Choose Your Kitesurf Gear

Updated February 2026 · 8 min read

Kitesurf gear consists of several elements: a kite, a control bar connected to the kite by lines, a board (twintip or Surf), and a harness that connects you to the kite. Optionally, you can add a foil to fly above the water. The choice of each component depends on your skill level, body size, and riding conditions. This guide, written by the GlissEvolution team (21 years of glisse expertise in Pornichet), helps you understand the role of each component and define your budget.

A complete kitesurf setup includes a kite, a bar, a board, and a harness, with an optional foil.

Budget approximately 2.000 to 3.€500 for a new beginner's set (1.200 to 2.€000 for second-hand), plus accessories, wetsuit, and lessons. For a first purchase, a kite + bar pack from the same brand remains the safest bet: compatibility warranty and optimized price.

The Elements of Your Setup

The Kite (Sail)

The kite is your engine: it catches the wind and propels you. It is connected to the bar by 4 or 5 lines, 20 to 25 meters long. What matters: the size (in m², depending on your weight and the wind), the profile (allround freeride, performance, or lightwind), and the construction (weight, stiffness, durability).

Your WeightKite Size (15-20 knots)
< 65 kg7 - 9 m²
65 - 80 kg9 - 11 m²
80 - 95 kg10 - 12 m²
> 95 kg12 - 14 m²

The bar

The bar is your control center: it allows you to steer the kite, adjust its power, and activate the safety system in case of an issue. Its size is chosen according to the kite's surface area.

Wing SizeBar size
< 9 m²40 - 45 cm
9 - 12 m²45 - 50 cm
> 12 m²50 - 55 cm

The board: twintip or Surf?

The twintip is the standard board, used by 80% of kiters: symmetrical, it allows you to ride in both directions without changing your stance, ideal for beginners and progression. The Surf (or surfkite) is a directional board inspired by surfing, for waves and strapless freestyle, reserved for intermediate to advanced riders.

TypeWho is it for?Advantages
TwintipBeginner to advancedAllround, easy, upwind performance
SurfIntermediate to expertSurf sensations, carving, style

The foil (kitefoil)

The harness

The harness transfers the kite's pull to your body, allowing you to ride without tiring your arms. For beginners, a seat harness offers more support; as you progress, many switch to a waist harness for more freedom.

Our Recommended Beginner Packs

Complete Pack or Separate Purchase?

For a first purchase, the kite + bar pack is our recommendation: guaranteed compatibility between the kite and the bar, a lower overall price than buying separately, and a unified manufacturer's warranty. Separate purchases are for experienced riders who want to precisely choose each component, at the risk of incompatibility and often a higher budget.

New or Second-Hand?

Buying second-hand allows you to save 30 to 50% on equipment checked in-store. What to check:

  • On the kite: watertightness of the struts, fabric condition, bridle condition.
  • On the bar: state of the lines, functional release system.
  • On the board: no delamination, inserts in good condition.

Looking for second-hand gear? Find our in-store checked equipment in our kitesurf second-hand selection.

The 5 buying mistakes to avoid

  1. Wrongly sized kite: respect the weight/size correspondence tables.
  2. Bar incompatible with the kite: each brand has its own bridle system.
  3. Neglecting safety: a leash, helmet, and impact vest are essential.
  4. Buying without taking lessons: kitesurfing requires at least some training.
  5. Underestimating the accessories budget: plan for an extra 300-€500 in addition to the setup.

And don't forget…

A wetsuit is essential 90% of the year in France: choose it according to the season and your riding spot. And remember to understand the weather conditions (wind, tide, waves) before each session - a key point for riding in safety and at the right time.

Where to start?

  1. Take lessons: 10 to 15 hours at a partner school to become independent.
  2. Define your budget: around 3.€000 for a complete new setup, or ~2.€000 for second-hand.
  3. Choose your setup: visit the store for personalized advice, or try it at our test center.

“For a first purchase, I recommend a kite + bar package from the same brand: it avoids compatibility issues. As for the board, the twintip is essential for learning. Come to the store, we'll advise you based on your size.” Greg, GlissEvolution, 21 years of riding
